Veterinary imaging for dogs and cats in Five Dock

Being able to see inside our patients is one of the most useful tools we have for finding out what is wrong. At Five Dock Vet we have full digital radiography, an in house ultrasound machine and visiting specialist sonographers, which means most pets can have their imaging done right here with us.

What can x-rays show in dogs and cats?

Our digital x-ray system produces detailed images in seconds that our vets can look at straight away. X-rays are really helpful for looking at:

  • Bones and joints, for fractures and arthritis
  • The chest, to check the heart and lungs in coughing pets
  • The abdomen, for obstructions and foreign bodies
  • Bladder stones
  • Teeth and the bone around them, with our dental x-rays
  • Pregnancy, to count puppies and kittens

Our vets can interpret most x-rays in house, and if needed we are able to instantly send images to a specialist radiologist for a second opinion.

What is ultrasound used for in pets?

Our human grade ultrasound machine lets us perform detailed examinations of individual organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys, bladder and intestines. Ultrasound is also used to look for soft tissue injuries, to confirm pregnancy, and to help us safely collect samples, such as urine straight from the bladder.

Visiting specialist sonographers

For more complex cases, such as a detailed look at the heart, we have specialist sonographers who visit our hospital. This means your pet can have a specialist level scan close to home in a place they know, and our vets can work together with the specialist on the results.

Does my pet need to be sedated for an x-ray or ultrasound?

Many pets need a light sedation for x-rays so that they stay still and comfortable, as some positions can be uncomfortable for sore animals and we want the clearest images possible. Ultrasound can often be done while your pet is awake with some gentle handling and a small patch of fur clipped. Your vet will let you know what your pet needs and whether they should fast beforehand.
