If you live in Haberfield, getting to Five Dock Veterinary Hospital couldn't be much easier. Our hospital is at 10 Ramsay Road, Five Dock, which is about a 5 minute drive straight along Ramsay Road from the Haberfield shops. There is on street parking nearby, so you won't need to worry about finding a spot with a wriggly dog or a cat carrier.

Which garden plants are poisonous to cats and dogs?

A leafy garden is a wonderful thing for pets, but there are a few common garden hazards we would love every Haberfield pet owner to know about:

• Lilies: all parts of the lily, including the pollen and the water in the vase, are extremely toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure. Even a small amount of pollen licked off their fur can be dangerous.
• Snail and slug bait: some baits can cause severe tremors and seizures in dogs and cats. If you need to use bait, look for pet safe options and keep the packet well out of reach.
• Rat and mouse bait: these can stop blood from clotting properly, and signs such as bleeding or bruising may not show up for several days.
• Fertilisers and blood and bone: dogs often find these very tempting to eat and they can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and, in large amounts, more serious problems.
• Sago palms, oleander and azaleas: these common garden plants can all be toxic if chewed.
• Compost and mouldy food: mouldy food can cause tremors in dogs, so keep compost bins secure.

What should I do if my pet eats something poisonous?

Please call us straight away on (02) 9713 7364, or an emergency hospital if we are closed, even if your pet seems completely fine. With many poisons, the sooner we treat them the better the outcome, and in some cases we can make your pet vomit before the poison is absorbed. Bring the packet or a photo of the plant with you if you can, as this helps our vets work out the best treatment. Please don't try to make your pet vomit at home.
