A local vet for active Russell Lea dogs

Russell Lea sits on the shores of Iron Cove, with the Bay Run just around the corner, so it is no surprise that we see so many fit and active dogs from this part of the peninsula. Our hospital at 10 Ramsay Road, Five Dock is about a 5 minute drive from Russell Lea via Lyons Road.

Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your dog's health, and we want to help them keep enjoying it for many years. Remember that dogs need to stay on a lead on the Bay Run itself.

Why is my dog limping after a walk or run?

A limp that appears after exercise can be caused by anything from a sore toe or torn nail to a muscle strain, a cruciate ligament injury, or arthritis flaring up. If your dog is limping for more than a day, won't put weight on a leg, or the limp keeps coming back, it is worth bringing them in. Our vets will do a full lameness assessment and may recommend x-rays to look at the bones and joints.

How far can I run with my dog?

Just like people, dogs need to build up their fitness gradually. A few things to keep in mind:

• Puppies shouldn't do long runs while their bones and joints are still growing. Ask our vets when your dog is old enough, as this depends on their breed and size.
• Flat faced breeds such as pugs and French bulldogs struggle to cool down, so they are much better suited to gentle walks.
• Older dogs may still love their walks but need shorter, more frequent outings.
• Always bring water for your dog, especially in warmer months.

Can hot footpaths burn my dog's paws?

Yes. On a sunny Sydney day, footpaths, roads and boardwalks can become hot enough to burn your dog's paw pads. A good test is to hold the back of your hand on the ground for a few seconds, and if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their paws. In summer, walk your dog early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?

Heatstroke can happen quickly on a hot or humid day, particularly in dogs who are exercising. Signs include heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, vomiting, wobbliness and collapse. If you think your dog has heatstroke, move them into the shade, wet them with cool (not icy) water and call us or an emergency hospital straight away.
